In the interstices between the fibers of the paper, in the subtle grooves where the ink has settled, the annual pulse of an empire is captured. Province registers are the product of a bureaucratic observation force that radiated from the center to the provinces from the Tanzimat period onwards; each one is a document that attempts to record the population, revenues, settlements, and administrative structure of that year, and which also carries the literary culture of its time. Reading these documents is not merely a matter of reading the text: the dating of a manuscript, the tracking of the chemistry of the ink, the deciphering of the diplomatic structure of a decree, the reduction of a building or an administrative scene to a depiction in a engraving—all of this requires a technical approach that opens up to this depth. The open archive of the Atatürk Library Rare Books Catalogue offers just such a gateway.
