A coin is one of the smallest but most enduring documents in history. These metal discs, struck from gold, silver, or copper, were not only circulated as a means of economic exchange; they also served as political proclamations, transcending borders and reflecting the dominant notions of sovereignty in their era. The records of ancient and Islamic coins catalogued in the American Numismatic Society (Nomisma ANS) open database illustrate the diplomatic and economic depth of these metal tokens.
