•One sheet of paper may lie dormant for thousands of years; yet reading it is as laborious as learning a language from scratch. The Orientalische vesikala in the collection of the Prussian Archives of Oriental Studies are the documents that keep this seemingly ordinary sentence alive: layers of ink, faded letters, traces of melted ink at the edges, and a historical memory embedded within the text that can only be read by an expert eye. These are not just old pieces of paper; they are time capsules containing the language itself. And the real challenge lies not in taking the object into one’s hands, but in attempting to read it.
