When a piece of papyrus is in the hand, the first thing that catches the eye is its form, before its content. The task of the paleographer is not to read the text, but to determine how old it is and whose pen it came from. In the ancient Greek and Roman writing tradition, the shapes of letters gradually evolve over the centuries: from a “papyrus hand” that is straight, sharp, and functional, to a more rounded, balanced “book hand,” and then to the uncial forms that became more prominent in the late antiquity.
