The institutional memory, social justice understanding, and urban development dynamics of Islam and the Ottoman civilization are shaped by the foundation system of trusts. Legal texts that document the permanent allocation of a property or income for the public good, education, health, urban development, or worship services are called trusts. The thousands of original trusts preserved in the archives of the General Directorate of Foundations of the Republic of Turkey are first-hand archival documents that fully reflect the legal language, financial structure, architectural plans, and social stratification of the era.
