The text before us represents a long journey that begins the moment the ink has settled on the paper. The Orient-Digital archive, which digitizes Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman manuscripts from the Berlin State Library, not only reveals the visual traces of this written heritage, but also the disciplines that make it readable. The lines of a decree, the calligraphy of a copyist, the golden reflection of a script — all bear the fingerprint of the hand that created them and the era in which they were produced. Reading these documents means reading not only the text, but also the technical and cultural infrastructure required to produce it.
